that secret that we know, that we don’t know how to tell

is that christmas morning creaks?
(and i know it well)

one. i think back to when my brother and my sister slept in an unlocked place, the only time I feel safe
.
When you come home from the first day of kindergarten, your mother Judy tells you, “You’re going to have a new baby sister.”
You do your best to understand what that means, but sometimes you’re not so sure. Your mother’s belly begins to grow and stretch and swell, and you imagine a whole world in there, playgrounds and stuffed animals and bathtubs full of bubbles for your new little sister to play with.
Sometimes you tell her stories—ones that you’ve heard or are learning to read, or ones that you make up.
Your mother tells you one night that the new baby’s name is Lucy. You feel her tiny little feet kick against your small hand.
That’s the first time you sing to her, a song that your dad sometimes plays in the car, “Here Comes the Sun” by The Beatles.
When Lucy’s born, two weeks early at the end of May, and you hold her for the first time, you sing to her then, too. She wraps her fingers around one of yours and you support her floppy head carefully, like your mother tells you to.
Lucy doesn’t cry at all.
That night is the first time you paint her a picture. It’s of a rainbow, because they’re the prettiest things you know how to paint.
mother please be proud (father be forgiving)
[i had such feels after seeing judy at graduation and getting to meet santana’s mom, and so this is santana and quinn’s entire headcanon through their mothers’ povs. drabble. faberry/brittana endgame, of course.
this is one of those things i had to write.title from “i was meant for the stage” by the decemberists. i mention “breathe me” by sia, and you can also listen to (watch) “blood” by the middle east, because it’s breathtaking.]

The second thing Maribel Lopez does after she sees the little plus sign on the pregnancy test—after calling David in tears, and he’s ecstatic—is open a savings account.
Because she’s pregnant, it’s easy for her morning coffee spare change to go into the account, and, for nine months, she doesn’t really think much of it. David makes plenty of money and he’s already receiving promotions at the hospital; they have a nice house, with a yard big enough for children, a dog, a swingset. Things haven’t always been like this—staying with David through his residency was a struggle—but now they’re happy.
And then that little baby is born, Maribel’s spitting image, a perfect (perfect) baby girl.
“Santana,” Maribel says, and, although she still feels a little out of breath, it sounds perfect against her lips.
She puts as much money into the savings account as she can after that, because Maribel wants Santana to have everything.
Maribel never drinks coffee in the mornings after Santana’s born, no matter how tired she is.

[my last weekly headcanon reparations of the season. because faberry deserves their space on the page, and you deserve a fitting beginning of their continued story. i hope this does them justice.

we can spend our lives letting the world tell us who we are. sane or insane. saints or sex addicts. heroes or victims. letting history tell us how good or bad we are. letting our past decide our future. or we can decide for ourselves. and maybe it’s our job to invent something better.

When Quinn says goodbye to Mr. Schue, she doesn’t think of when he never acknowledged how sad she was at the beginning of Senior year. She doesn’t think about how he ignored her sometimes, or how he said stupid things a lot of the time. She doesn’t think of his double-standards, how he supported Rachel and Finn’s (almost) marriage.
Because today she stands. She walks. She gives him a hug. She says, “Thank you.”
She thinks only of the Glist, and how he hadn’t told Figgins, and how, maybe that one time, he really had saved her.
He told her that she was Quinn Fabray, and that she could do anything.
Today, he tells her, “You’re amazing.”
“You helped make that happen,” she says.
He laughs. So does she.
.
It’s weird, when she kisses Puck. She’s a second away from telling him, from coming out to him—she’s been a second away from it for a year now—but then it dawns on Quinn that tonight isn’t about her.
Tonight is about Puck, and tonight is about PuckandQuinn, QuinnandPuck. But mostly, tonight is about Beth.
So she bites her tongue and smiles. She kisses him, for luck, for confidence. Mostly she kisses him because she knows the feeling of the desperate need for someone—anyone—to care.
Puck doesn’t taste like Santana, or Brittany, or the pretty girl who goes to Ohio State that Quinn had met over the summer at the mall. He tastes, mostly, like mistakes, but Quinn believes in him anyway.
A few days later, when he gets a C-, she is genuinely happy. She is genuinely proud.
He whispers in her ear, “We could be great together.”
She shakes her head, squeezes his forearm. “You don’t need me to be great.”

one. ‘it takes two to make an accident’
.
It’s almost like they’re bound to end up like this. Quinn is damaged—broken, sometimes (more than a little) crazy, humbled, healing—and sometimes it hits Rachel in the chest when she sees her in her wheelchair. It’s one of the most painful experiences Rachel has the moment she realizes that Quinn can’t dance at her Senior Prom—it feels like the first few days after the accident, when Quinn had looked so hurt, when she’d been on a ventilator—but then Quinn smiles at Rachel.
Tonight Quinn looks beautiful.
So it’s almost like when Rachel says, “When I look back on my high school career the one thing, the one accomplishment that i’m going to be so proud of is that I found a way to be your friend,” it’s just fate. It’s just finally telling the truth.
Because Rachel means it. She means it maybe more than she’s ever meant anything in her entire life.
And then, minutes later, when she’s crowned prom queen—prom queen—and when she’s dancing with Finn and Quinn stands up, Rachel can’t look away.
Quinn takes everything from her. It’s probably the thing Rachel is most sure of in her entire life. Not concretely, not in a way that she can really make sense of, but she knows.
Because Quinn takes her breath. Quinn takes her gaze. Quinn takes her hand, and Rachel doesn’t want to let go.

Are you ten years ago?
AU beginning after ‘Funk’. Rachel got the hell out of Lima, Ohio immediately after graduation, breaking Quinn’s heart in the process, and never looked back. Now, ten years later, she’s back and Quinn is the one to show her the aftermath and the pieces of what she left behind - all the while trying desperately not to fall back in love with her ex-girlfriend.
Warnings: Pre-story character death discussed in detail.

i’ll follow the sun
[everyone helping quinn actually deal with the multitude of feelings that would go along with facing the idea of possible paraplegia for the rest of her life. don’t worry, quinn’s still quinn and faberry is on. judy, frannie, sam, joe, brittana, puck, and rachel all appear.][[basically just my weekly fixing of headcanon. my references pay tribute to the beatles. if you want something new to check out, here’s joshua james’ beautiful cover of sufjan stevens’ “to be alone with you”]]

one. all the lonely people, where do they all belong?
.
The first night in the hospital when things are really real again, Quinn cries. It wakes Judy up, which makes Quinn cry harder, because she can’t remember the last time she’d seen her mother so disheveled.
Judy comes and holds Quinn’s hand, starts whispering the beginnings of a fairytale.
But then she mixes up the princesses, and Quinn is about to correct her when Judy’s fingers move up to run through Quinn’s hair like a comb.
Quinn closes her eyes and leans into her mom’s touch, feels the life there, and, as her mother softly tells of Cinderella and the seven dwarves, Quinn smiles just a little and falls asleep.
.
It’s strange, having Judy help her with everything. They’d never been particularly close—Frannie had always been the golden child, thin, pretty, smart, a talented painter from preschool—so the first time Judy comes into Quinn’s room after she’s gotten released, Quinn has to fight back about seven thousand different forms of the word no when Judy shyly asks, “Do you want to take a bath?”
But Quinn really does need to take one, so she simply nods.
